The waistband

Fit is also brand dependent. A size M from one brand does not have to fit the same as a size M from another brand. So it is better to use your actual waist measurement and the brand’s size chart than just your usual trouser or underwear size.
Why do men wear a jockstrap?
There is no single reason to wear a jockstrap. For some men, it is mainly a comfortable type of underwear; for others, it is a style choice.
Support without much fabric
Because the front consists of a pouch and the back is open, you have no leg openings and almost no fabric around the buttocks. That can be nice when you want plenty of freedom of movement or simply do not like extra fabric around your legs.
A different fit from briefs
Briefs cover the buttocks and wrap around the body. A jockstrap does not. That makes it feel more open and airy, while the pouch at the front can still provide support.

Not every jockstrap is protective sports underwear
This distinction is important. The jockstrap comes from the sports world, and there are models specifically used as athletic supporters or in combination with a protective cup. But many modern jockstraps are designed as fashion underwear or clubwear.
So a jockstrap with a sporty look is not automatically suitable as protection during contact sports. When choosing a jockstrap, the pouch is at least as important as the color. There is no single best pouch: it depends on how much room and support you like.

Jockstrap, briefs, thong, or suspender: what is the difference?
Jockstrap versus briefs
A briefs style covers the buttocks and has fabric that runs all the way around the body. A jockstrap replaces the back with two straps. Both can have a supportive pouch, but the feeling at the back is completely different.
Jockstrap versus thong or string
In a thong or string, a narrow section runs between the buttocks. With a jockstrap, it is exactly the opposite: the center of the back remains free, and two straps run under the buttocks.
Jockstrap versus suspender
A suspender leaves the back even more open. The model consists of a waistband and a pouch, with the pouch not connected to the back of the waistband by straps or fabric. A jockstrap, by contrast, has two elastic straps that run from the pouch around the buttocks to the waistband. Jockstrap versus boxer trunk
A boxer trunk provides considerably more coverage. It has short legs and fully covers the buttocks. If you want as little fabric as possible and maximum freedom at the back, these two models are almost at opposite ends of the spectrum.
Can you wear a jockstrap every day?
Yes. There is nothing about the design that means a jockstrap is only meant for sports, a party, or a special occasion. If the size is right, the pouch fits comfortably, and the material suits what you are doing that day, you can simply wear a jockstrap as everyday underwear.
For everyday use, many men choose a softer cotton model. For a warm day, festival, or club night, a lightweight polyester or polyamide fabric, possibly as fine microfiber or open mesh, may feel more comfortable. In the end, it mostly comes down to personal preference.
What size jockstrap do you need?
Do not automatically go by the letter size you always buy. Brands use different size charts, and the stretch of waistbands also varies.
My advice is to measure your waist circumference in centimeters and compare it with the brand’s official size chart. If you are between two sizes, also look at the material and construction. A very stretchy waistband can feel different from a wide classic sports band.
